The word "Sonar" is an abbreviation for "SOund, NAvigation, and Ranging." It was developed as a means of tracking enemy submarines during World War II. A sonar consists of a transmitter, transducer, receiver and display.

In the simplest terms, an electrical impulse from a transmitter is converted into a sound wave by the transducer and sent into the water. When this wave strikes an object, it bounces back. This bounce back hits the transducer, which converts it back into an electric signal. This signal is amplified by the receiver and sent to the display. This process repeats itself many times per second.

There are four facets to a good sonar unit:

1. High power transmitter.
2. Efficient transducer.
3. Sensitive receiver.
4. High resolution and high contrast display.

GPS stands for Global Positioning System. GPS is a navigational system that can accurately locate your position anywhere on the Earth. This technology is available to everyone, everywhere, day and night, and best of all, at no cost for use of the navigational data. GPS uses 24 satellites which are located 11,000 miles above the Earth. The satellites transmit data back to Earth and by locking onto this transmitted data, a GPS receiver can process the data and tell you where you are on the Earth. Lowrance GPS products are GPS receivers. These products gather data from a satellite and display your location on a screen.

GPS works 24 hours a day, in all weather conditions, and can be used worldwide for precise navigation on land, on water and even in the air. Some of its many current applications include: boating, fishing, hunting, scouting on land or from the air, hiking, camping, biking, rafting, pack trips by horseback, hot air ballooning, general aviation, snowmobiling and skiing, search and rescue, emergency vehicle tracking, off-road, highway driving and a host of other outdoor activities where accurate positioning is helpful.
